Underkeel – Stones of the Western Sea doesn’t read like a conventional seascape so much as a cross-section of memory. From across the room you see a long pale spar of driftwood riding a band of turquoise water, with a field of green stones resting in the quiet beneath. Step closer and the surface breaks apart into striated lines of grain, rippling contours of current, and a lattice of sun-struck reflections dancing over every rock. The waterline becomes a dividing stroke: calm sky-coloured bands above, weighty stones and deep teal shadows below.

The title points to that view from beneath the hull – the world a seafarer would feel under the keel long before land comes into sight. The driftwood reads as both timber and longship, worn thin by years in the Western Sea; the stones below carry the colours of Hebridean shallows and cold Atlantic light. The rippled contours suggest charts and currents, echoing the hidden paths that tied Norse-Gael coasts together. It’s an image of passage held in stillness: the vessel poised between worlds, the rocks like patient witnesses, the water a lens where surface and depth speak at once.

Stylistically, this is contemporary abstract landscape with a strong photo-realist undercurrent. Lines of wood grain are treated almost like engraved drawing, while the underwater stones resolve into soft, rounded forms netted with white light. The palette moves from cool aqua and sea-glass greens to muted driftwood greys, creating a piece that feels clean, modern, and quietly luminous. With its wide 2:1 panoramic format, Underkeel – Stones of the Western Sea is made to anchor long walls: above a sofa or sideboard, along a dining room, in a modern lodge, coastal home, or executive office that wants a statement of calm strength rather than spectacle.
