At a distance, Tide Hollow – Eye of the Coast reads like a column of golden light rising out of the sea – a tall band of amber, turquoise and sky-blue that feels half-wave, half-timber. Step closer and the illusion breaks apart into finely painted growth rings and ripples, as though you’re looking down into the hollow heart of a tree while clear coastal water rushes over it. The “eye” at centre is a small, electric pool of blues, ringed by honeyed wood and flecks of sunlight that seem to move as you shift your vantage point.

The title points to that strange meeting place where land and ocean grind against one another over years: a hollow worn into driftwood, a pocket in the rocks, a tide-cut pool that remembers every season. The concentric rings read as both tree-years and wave-cycles, turning the image into a kind of coastal timepiece. The blue eye can be seen as the watching coast itself, as a portal into deeper water, or simply as the still point in the middle of all that motion – a reminder of calm at the centre of a restless world.

Stylistically, this is an abstract photo-realism painting. The surface is built from tight, curved lines and high-key colour, giving the wood grain and water a near-photographic clarity while still reading as paint. Bands of molten gold, burnt umber and amber wrap around the hollow, while the surrounding water shifts from teal and sea-green into bright sky-blue. Fine cracks, knots, and light trails in the ripples keep the piece grounded in the physical world even as the overall composition feels almost otherworldly.

With its tall 1:2 vertical format, Tide Hollow – Eye of the Coast is designed for spaces that call for a strong, narrow statement: stairwells, entry halls, the end of a corridor, or the wall beside a window looking out to sea. It sits naturally in coastal homes, holiday apartments, and modern interiors that favour timber, linen and clean white walls – but it also brings a vivid, elemental energy into city spaces that long for the shore. Hung alone, it becomes a focal point; grouped with other coastal abstracts, it acts as a visual anchor for the whole collection.
