In this piece the sacred Irish oak is rebuilt as a shimmering wall of stone and glass. The Derry Tree – Noble of the Forests sets a dark, grounded trunk against a field of soft green and pale limestone tiles, its crown opening into warm golds, creams, and ember oranges. The result is a calm yet luminous presence – a single tree holding its place between night sky and quiet earth.
The title nods to Doire – the oak grove behind the name Derry – and to the oak’s old honorific as the “noble of the woods.” Here the tree becomes a memory of homeland and lineage: a rooted form rising from a tiled ground like a city wall, its leaves drifting outward as if they were seasons, blessings, or spoken prayers carried on the wind. It’s a quiet tribute to endurance, shelter, and the strength of a family line that refuses to be erased.
Visually, the work sits between mosaic and stained glass. The trunk and branches are built from dark tesserae that read like hand-laid stone, while the canopy glows with layered marbles and translucent leaf veining. Up close you see individual tiles – cool sea-glass greens, warm sandstone, pearly whites – each with its own texture. Step back and they resolve into a single oak standing firm against a deep black sky, the whole surface reading as a carefully crafted wall piece.
With its wide 2:1 format and balanced, neutral-warm palette, this canvas settles comfortably above a sofa, sideboard, or low bookcase, and works equally well in dining rooms, studies, and reception spaces.
