In Stormroot Bearing the Ninth Wave, a twisted coastal tree stands in the very path of the surf, its trunk arcing like a living question mark between sea and sky. Sunlight catches the salt-slick roots as they grip the tide-line, while a green Atlantic wave rears up behind, caught at the moment it crashes around the trunk. In the foreground the foaming shallows lace across pale sand and the sprawling root system, turning the lower half of the canvas into a rich tapestry of tide-line foam, wet sand and returning water.

The tree reads as both survivor and standard-bearer – storm-scarred yet unbroken, raging into the force that tries to erase it. Its sinewed grain and outstretched branches feel almost figurative, like a guardian holding its ground at the border of land and sea. The bright sky, stacked with clouds and salt spray, keeps the scene firmly in daylight: this is not a bleak tempest, but the fierce clarity of a sun-lit storm, where each new wave tests the roots and proves their strength.

The square format gives the composition a strong, centered presence, ideal for rooms that need a single, decisive focal point. It hangs naturally over a sideboard, reading nook, or coastal bedroom, and works equally well in a modern apartment or a timber-lined lodge. Paired with other coastal works, it can anchor a nature-themed wall; on its own, it stands as a meditation on endurance, faith, and the beauty of weathered things that refuse to yield.

The title, Stormroot Bearing the Ninth Wave, nods to old mariners’ lore that the ninth wave in a set is the heaviest and most dangerous; this gnarled tree stands as a storm-rooted guardian absorbing that final breaker, a picture of endurance when the hardest seas arrive.
