In Still Life: Goldfish, a trio of bright red fish cruise along the lower edge of the canvas like animated punctuation marks in an otherwise classic still life. Behind them, two dark glass bottles rise out of a deep blue ground, their lacquered surfaces catching small flashes of reflected light. Broad, green leaves arc out of the taller bottle and droop toward the fish, creating a canopy of foliage that frames the scene and pulls the eye upward through layered tones of teal, viridian, and shadowed indigo.
The work plays deliberately with the tradition of still life painting. Instead of fruit or flowers arranged on a table, you get glass, foliage, and goldfish sharing the same moody blue interior—a quiet, surreal world where objects feel half-aquatic, half-domestic. The exaggerated eyes and simplified bodies of the fish are a playful nod in memoriam to the Artist's favourite illustrator, P. D. Eastman, whose spirited, characterful animals shaped the visual language of a generation. Here, that influence filters through a fine-art lens: the fish remain whimsical and story-ready, but the bottles and leaves carry real painterly weight.
Stylistically the piece sits between contemporary still life and expressive illustration. The bottles and leaves are rendered with lush, oil-like brushwork and sculptural light, while the fish are bold, graphic accents that read instantly from across the room. On the wall, this square canvas works beautifully as a conversation piece in living rooms, studies, reading nooks, or creative offices—anywhere a single artwork can add colour, humour, and a touch of surreal narrative without losing its grounding in serious painting.
