The Hebridean coast is caught at full brightness in Sky Kin VII – Gannet in the Glittering Noon. A sheer ember-orange cliff rises on the left, topped with dense green scrub, its face broken into short, loaded strokes of ochre, rust, and deep umber. Beyond it, a soft grey headland closes the far side of the bay. Overhead, the sky is mapped with rings and dots of pale blue and white, a pointillist field around the hard white disc of the noon sun. Across this light, a single gannet arcs back toward the cliffs, wings spread wide as it glides into the sun-path that runs straight down the water.

Here the bird reads as a watcher returning to its ground, rather than a wanderer disappearing into distance. In the spiritual reading of the Sky Kin series, the gannet holds its place as a messenger within God’s created order – a sentry crossing between the blazing sky and the glittering sea. The noon light has none of the drama of storm or dusk; instead it carries that fierce, honest clarity that many Hebridean travellers know well: everything revealed at once, with nowhere to hide. For buyers who see the Hebrides as part of God’s ordered world, the work can almost be read as a hymn of midday – creation singing under the full gaze of the sun.

Stylistically, this canvas sits near abstract realism with a strong mosaic tendency. The sea is laid down as thousands of circular marks, from deep indigo and cobalt at the bottom edge through teals, aquas, and pale turquoise nearer the horizon, with warm ember notes echoing the cliff. These discs can be read as reflected light, as pebbles seen through shallow water, or as pure colour – all three readings live comfortably together. The tall 9:16 vertical format makes it a natural statement piece for narrow walls: over a console or sideboard, anchoring the end of a hallway, beside bookcases in a study, or as a bright focal canvas in a coastal living room, holiday home, or sunlit stairwell. It also pairs easily with other Sky Kin works for collectors building a Hebridean gannet wall.
