A sheer Hebridean cliff drops straight into the water in Sky Kin IV – Gannet Over the Quiet Sound. The rock face is drawn in long vertical bands of cream, slate and rust-gold, falling from a dense canopy of green into a narrow, dark sound that mirrors the stone like a column. Beyond it, a softer green headland steps away, its slopes catching cooler light as the coast recedes. In the foreground, faceted ochre and umber rocks stack along the lower left corner, while the sea at their feet breaks into white foam and stylised Gaelic scroll-waves that curl out across a band of deep blue. The upper half of the canvas opens into sky: layered blues, soft cloud forms and, high above it all, a single gannet cutting across the open air.

The mood is quieter and weightier than a simple sunny postcard. The light has the sharpened clarity of weather about to turn – colours deepened, shadows a little longer – while the surface of the sound remains calm. In that atmosphere the gannet reads as a watcher rather than a spectacle, a small but decisive mark of life moving over an ancient coastline. For viewers who see God’s hand in the order of sea and stone, the painting can feel like a coastal psalm: the cliff standing like a pillar, the scroll-waves tracing a kind of script, and the bird passing over as a messenger crossing the mouth of the sound.

Stylistically this is contemporary abstract realism with a strong graphic edge. The cliff is rendered with enough detail to feel geologically honest, yet simplified into vertical colour fields that keep it painterly. The sea combines flat, enamel-like blues with calligraphic white line, and the foreground rocks are broken into bold planes of ochre, red-brown and dark shadow. The tall 2:3 vertical format makes Sky Kin IV a natural statement piece for places that need height and focus – end walls, stairwells, narrow entryways, beside bookcases in a study, or as a single dramatic canvas in a coastal bedroom or modern lodge. It also sits comfortably with the other Sky Kin works for collectors building a Hebridean gannet grouping.
