In Sky Kin III – Gannet Above the Tidal Script, a single gannet cuts across a field of deep Atlantic blue, the only solid body moving through a world of light and pattern. On the left, the water darkens into indigo and near-black, marked with carved spiral motifs that feel half-current, half-inscription, as though the sea itself remembers every tide that has passed over it. From there, the blue opens and lifts toward the right, and the surface becomes a constellation of small golden marks, like sunlit spray, lanterns on distant boats, or stars caught in the skin of the water. The bird flies straight into this radiance, wings fully extended, feathers rendered in fine, almost mosaic detail, warm russet underwings flashing against the cool of the sea.

The piece sits at the midpoint of the Sky Kin sequence: the moment when the gannet is no longer hugging the cliffs or riding the shoreline, but has committed to the open water. The spirals beneath suggest currents, weather, and older movement, the hidden patterns that shape a life long before we recognise them. Above them, the drifting flecks of gold read as both reflected light and small mercies: the glints of Providence that appear, disappear, and return as we keep moving forward. For anyone who reads the world as created and sustained by God, the painting quietly suggests trust in that unseen ordering, the bird flying in confidence over depths it cannot see, guided by light that seems to fall from beyond the frame.

Stylistically, this is contemporary abstract realism with a deliberate contrast of languages: the gannet is crisp, almost printlike, with ink-clean edges and armour-like patterning on the wings, while the water remains soft, layered, and overtly painterly. The result feels part illuminated manuscript, part modern seascape, a bridge between Norse-Gael heritage and present-day studio practice. With its wide 2:1 panoramic format, Sky Kin III is designed as a true anchor piece: over a sofa or sideboard, along a long hallway, in a study, library, or executive office, or in any coastal home or retreat that wants more than simple “ocean décor”. It pairs naturally with other works in the Sky Kin series, but is strong enough to stand alone as a single statement of movement, memory, and faith over deep water.
