A single Hebridean gannet cuts across the canvas of Sky Kin I – Gannet Over the Reflecting Stack, wings held in a clean, decisive line as it flies low over a field of broken light. On the left, a tall sea-stack rises out of frame, its face built from thick strokes of ochre, rust, and slate. Those colours spill down into the water as fractured reflections – bands of orange and blue shivering in the swell. Beneath the bird, the sea becomes a mosaic: tiles of indigo, ultramarine, and pale blue march across the surface in curved rows, interspersed with bright dots that feel like spray, stars, and data all at once.

The gannet itself is drawn differently from the world it flies through. Where the sea and cliff are rendered in loose, painterly blocks, the bird’s head, beak, and wings are picked out with sharper, ink-like linework of a graphic figure collaged on top of the painting below. That contrast is deliberate to hook the eye and draw the viewer in. The environment reads as the deep, layered memory of the coast – currents, tides, and seasons woven into a single field of colour – while the bird arrives as a living interruption, a messenger. For those who see God’s hand in land and sea, the rays of light that fan out around the gannet suggest more than sunlight: they hint at calling, guidance, and the strange clarity that sometimes comes when a soul moves in step with its purpose.

Stylistically, this work sits in contemporary abstract figurative art with a mixed-media feel: part mosaic seascape, part graphic bird study, all held together by a disciplined blue palette and strong directional movement. The wide 3:2 horizontal format is designed for real rooms rather than galleries alone – over a sofa, above a sideboard or console, anchoring a study or music room, or adding a striking note of blue to a coastal interior. Within the Sky Kin series, this is one of the more intimate pieces: a single protagonist in a vast field of water and light, for collectors who like a clear figure set against an abstract, symbolic ground.
