Melinda’s Butterfly captures a single, impossible moment in a canyon of pale stone. Sheer cliffs rise on both sides, warm with sand, ochre, and teal shadow. In the open sky between them, a butterfly explodes into being, its wings carved from molten orange paint, its body held at the exact centre of the valley like a living crossroad between earth and heaven.

The work is rooted in a true story of grief and guidance: a man walking alone toward a hidden grave, unsure of the path, is quietly led the whole way by a single butterfly that appears at his feet and never leaves the track or his side. That quiet, uncanny leading is what this piece holds. The valley stands for the hard ground we walk after losing someone we love; the butterfly is the mercy we did not expect, arriving anyway. It is not sentimental, it is a painting for those who know what it is to carry regret, yet still be guided to the place where farewell and hope meet.

Stylistically, this is an abstract-figurative landscape with an expressionist edge. Thick, knife-like marks build the canyon walls and tree line, while the sky remains almost untouched so the orange and ember-brown wings can burst outward in shards and splashes. Teal greens, rusted browns and chalky stone whites hold the lower half of the painting in a grounded, physical world; above them, the 2:1 panoramic sweep pulls the eye straight to the butterfly, then back along the valley toward the distant mountains and the quiet, receding light.

As wall art, Melinda’s Butterfly works beautifully over a sofa or sideboard, in a hallway where people pass it every day, or in a study, music room, or prayer corner where its story can be sat with in silence. It reads first as a striking contemporary landscape, then, on a second look, as a piece about being led through loss, reminding the viewer that even in the hardest valleys, they are not walking alone.
