In Marker Tree of the Free Man, a single young tree stands upright against a cleared field of glowing, paper-gold light. The trunk is slender but sure, rising cleanly from a band of shadowed ground and casting a long, decisive silhouette. Behind it, distant blue-grey ranges and a dark stand of trees are rendered in restrained tones, so the eye always returns to that one marked tree. The fold lines and subtle surface scuffs read like creases in old survey paper, as if this image began life in a worn notebook carried across new country.
The mood is quiet but declarative. Rather than a busy narrative scene, the work holds to a simple idea: one person, one horizon, one chosen landmark on a wide, open land. It evokes the era of explorers, freed convicts, and early settlers marking out their claims. Not with flags or slogans, but with a measured drawing of a living tree that would outlast them.
