A long line of silhouetted figures moves in unison across a weathered wall of cream, umber and steel blue. Lockstep – Diversity Without Difference catches that unsettling rhythm of the crowd: everyone going the same way, at the same speed, under the same invisible instruction. From a distance the piece reads as a single horizontal pulse of motion; step closer and you notice how each figure is technically distinct, yet absorbed into one repeating pattern of limbs and stride.
The title points quietly at our age of slogans and conformity. We hear constant talk of “diversity,” yet anyone who steps out of line is promptly and viciously excommunicated and labelled "Right Wing". The artist portrays the differences as cosmetic—skirts of red or amber, a bag, a slight tilt of the head—while the movement remains strictly coordinated. The result is both playful and pointed: a procession that feels busy, even cheerful at first glance, and then reveals itself as a commentary on groupthink, intense social pressure, and the extreme narrowing of acceptable ideas and thoughts.
Visually, the work sits between abstract cityscape and figurative frieze. Vertical scrapes and panels run the full height of the canvas, like old billboards or apartment blocks streaked with rain and rust. Above, a band of dripped orange and black hangs like industrial fallout; below, the walking silhouettes cut a clean, graphic line in dense black. Warm ochres and small jolts of turquoise break through the pale ground, so the surface feels layered, lived-in and painterly. The 3:1 panoramic format stretches the procession into a true wall-length narrative.
This canvas is built for long walls and conversation spaces—over a sideboard, along a hallway, behind a sofa, or in a studio, co-working space, or office where ideas are supposed to move freely.
