A sheer Atlantic headland rises on the right, its rust and umber planes stacked like carved basalt, incised with fine vertical seams of light. In Light on the Western Edge, that mass of cliff carries the eye upward to a solitary lighthouse, standing white against a field of radiant sun-rays. From a hidden sun beyond the frame, bands of gold, ochre, and pale cream fan across the whole left side of the canvas, sweeping over a Gaelic spiral motif in the sky and down toward the sea. Below, blocky rock formations break the surface as the swell drives in from the open ocean, white water catching and echoing the same diagonal energy as the rays above.

Symbolically, the work sits at the meeting point of boundaries: land and sea, safety and risk, known coast and unknown horizon. The lighthouse reads as a watchman on the western edge of the Hebrides – a keeper of light set above deep water and ancient stone. The spirals, carved into rock and sky, tie that watchfulness back to Gaelic ancestry and the long memory of these coasts: the continuity of faith, lineage, and place written into the very structure of creation. The radiating bands of light feel less like weather and more like blessing – an ordered, covenant light that cuts through spray, distance, and the slow erosion of time.

Stylistically this canvas sits in contemporary abstract realism with strong symbolic undercurrents. The rocks, lighthouse, and sea retain enough realism to satisfy coastal and nautical collectors, while the mosaic-like rays, spirals, and sharpened cliff geometry root the work in a distinctly modern, Gaelic-inspired language. The tall 1:2 vertical format makes it a natural statement piece for stairwells, narrow entry walls, reading corners, prayer or meditation spaces, or coastal retreat living rooms. It also pairs well with other Hebridean and coastal works in the collection for buyers building a light-and-sea themed grouping.
