Child of Green Rains captures the feel of a long, hot Queensland summer just before the storm finally breaks. The whole scene is built as a big, unapologetic field of greens and yellows – more about atmosphere than perfection – made to drop a wall of colour into an ordinary room. In the middle distance a young girl moves along a humid, sub-tropical track, small but steady, as light spills down through a canopy of trees and tin-roof glare. It’s memory, sweat, and heat-haze turned into paint.
For the artist, this is a return to childhood in South East Queensland: cicadas shrieking, afternoon storms building, and the easy, laconic freedoms of being a Gen X kid in the 70s and 80s. The lone figure can read as a sister, a daughter, or simply the kid we all once were, walking ahead while the adults are busy elsewhere. She’s not posed or heroic – just moving forward easily through the weather of her own life, running ahead as though eager for the future. The path of reflections around her feels like shallow floodwater after a downpour, where the sky and gum leaves meet in broken patches on the ground.
Thick, palette-knife strokes stack vertically like trunks, weatherboards, and curtain rain. Deep bottle-greens sit beside sour limes, with flashes of ochre, sunlit cream, and teal blue punched through the surface. From across the room it reads as a lush abstract cacophony of grasses, fronds, and towering branches; up close, you can see the scraped edges, ridges of paint, and the small figure resolved from a handful of marks. The wide 2:1 format lets the colour run sideways across the wall, echoing the long, low horizon of suburban streets and coastal bush.
This is a natural fit for living rooms, dining areas, hallways, and family spaces that need life without feeling precious. It sits comfortably above a sofa or sideboard, especially in homes that lean wide-open and relaxed – Australian and quietly grounded rather than formal. Child of Green Rains brings that first-breath-after-rain feeling indoors – fresh, green, a little nostalgic, and easy to live with.
