In By Oar and Tide: Ancient Gaelic Highways, a single dark boat rests in the foreground, riding the quiet pull of a river or sea-loch. Behind it, a chain of mountains rises in layered blues and umbers, their slopes catching just enough light to hold their shape against the sky. The water has been worked up in short, directional strokes of gold, bronze, and deep brown, so that the reflected sky becomes a molten path running straight toward the hull. The whole surface has the patina of an old oil painting: hairline textures, worn edges, and a glow that feels like candlelight on varnish.

The title reaches back to the days when the Gaels travelled not by road but by oar, following tidal currents and river mouths from settlement to settlement. Here the boat is both vessel and witness. It sits in the track of light like a marker on a route that has been used for millenia, where ancestry moved quietly between islands, headlands, and sea-lochs. The mountains and tree line hold the scene in a kind of hush: this is not a storm piece but an evening one, full of distance, memory, and the sense that the water itself remembers who has passed along it.

On the wall, the painting reads as a warm, contemplative vertical landscape with a strong focal anchor in the lower half. From across the room you see a dark boat on a golden river; up close, the brushwork in the water and sky reveals fine rhythm and texture, with the metallic golds and bronzes giving an almost lit-from-within quality. It’s a natural fit for living rooms, studies, reading corners, and lodge-style interiors where you want a piece that feels both historic and quietly luxurious rather than loud or decorative.

Available in six vertical formats, from an intimate 12" × 18" through 16" × 24", 20" × 30", 24" × 36", 32" × 48", up to a commanding 40" × 60" statement piece for larger walls or open-plan spaces.
