In Ancient Highway Racing Riven Sky, a narrow sailboat runs straight toward the viewer down a glassy Hebridean channel, its wake a thin white seam in an otherwise mirror-still sea. On either side, weather-carved rock rises in long, low ridges, anchoring the scene in an ancient coastline that feels both real and remembered. Above, the whole sky explodes into motion – bands of cloud riven into streaks of white and deep Atlantic blue that converge toward the boat in a rush of speed and light.
The piece reads as both seascape and vision. The calm water feels like an old maritime highway worn into the surface of the world, while the sky tears open overhead like a fast-moving veil, hinting at unseen forces driving the little vessel forward. There’s a quiet tension between the stillness of the boat and the violence of the sky, between the solidity of rock and the weightless spray of cloud – a tension that evokes pilgrimage, calling, and the long memory of Norse-Gael sea routes.
Stylistically the work sits in contemporary abstract realism: the rocks, hull and reflections hold enough detail for coastal and sailing collectors, while the sky and water are pushed into gestural, almost calligraphic strokes.
