In this panoramic landscape “After the Ice, Before the Gaels”, the world has only just stepped out from under the weight of a mile-deep glacier. Cool, fractured stone walls rise on either side like ancient guardians, framing a valley that glows with embered light. The scene feels both remote and intimate, a place you have never stood yet recognise in your bones – the kind of country from which a North Atlantic people and their stories could be born.

At the centre, a mass of burnished orange and copper rock flares like a remembered fire, pressed between vast grey flanks that still carry the memory of ice. The dark line of conifer forest and boulder-strewn foreground root the composition in the lived world, anchoring the viewer at ground level while the mountains speak of deep time, migration and the long prelude to Gaelic and Norse-Gaelic history. It reads as a secular ancestral creation story: the land preparing itself for the arrival of our nomadic forebears at the end of the last Ice Age.

The artwork is built from a mosaic of interlocking shards, echoing stained glass without losing its painterly heart. Cool slate blues, glacier greens and stone whites on the outer faces wrap around a core of molten ochres, rusts and golds, creating a powerful conversation between cold and warmth, age and emergence. From a distance it reads as a sweeping mountain range; up close, each facet reveals subtle texture, pigment shifts and the faint scars of imagined geology.

This is a genuine statement piece for wide walls – ideal above a long sofa, in a dining room, executive office, reception lobby or boardroom where you want quiet authority rather than noise. Its horizontal sweep lends a sense of openness and scale, bringing the calm of high country into contemporary interiors while hinting at heritage, endurance and the stories that precede us.
